In November 2016, ICDC conducted a Regional Training Course on Monitoring the International Code of Marketing Breastmilk Substitutes with support and funding from our sister organisation, IBFAN Asia. The intended goal of the training was to build capacity for a ‘younger’ generation of Code monitors and advocates from selected countries in the region....

In October last year, IBFAN-ICDC blew the whistle against blatant violations of the Cambodian Law (Sub-Decree on Marketing of Products for Infants and Young Child Feeding, also known as Sub-Decree 133) that gives effect to the Code but remains largely unenforced. Under Sub-Decree 133, promotion of infant and young child feeding products at point-of-sale and healthcare facilities are not allowed. ...

With the support from the WHO Country Office, ICDC consultants were in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 27 June to 1 July to conduct a Workshop on the Monitoring and Enforcement of the Sri Lankan Code for the Promotion, Protection & Support of Breastfeeding and Marketing of Designated Products. This capacity building exercise for government officials of the Ministry of Health was an opportunity for ICDC to revisit its past work on the Code in the country....

In a bizarre episode that shows no country can afford to rest on its laurels after successful Code implementation, Fiji’s labelling provisions vanished. Fiji amended their Food Safety Regulations on 23 June 2016 that has the effect of deleting all labelling provisions in Part IV of its Marketing Controls (Foods for Infants and Young Children) Regulations 2010. ...

WHO has been undergoing a reform process for the past few years in three main areas: programmatic, managerial, and governance. FENSA, the Framework of Engagement with Non-State Actors, part of WHO’s governance reform, was adopted through WHA Resolution 69.10 on 28 May, 2016....

Six years after the initial call for advice on ending inappropriate promotion of foods for infants and young children, recommendations have finally been drafted and adopted. They will be helpful to all countries fighting aggressive promotion of commercial foods for babies. The first WHO/UNICEF/IBFAN joint global report - Marketing of breastmilk substitutes: National implementation of the International Code Status Report 2016, for which IBFAN-ICDC provided technical support, was launched on 9 May at the Geneva Press Club. The report presents the legal status of the Code in WHO Member States including information on the few national efforts to monitor and enforce the Code through formal mechanisms...
